Before setting foot in Greece for the first time, I imagined the Ionian Islands just like in the novels by Durrell and De Bernières that I loved so much: a small world on the edge of reality, with very hot summer days, immense olive groves and a sea as blue as the sky. I feared that upon arrival in Kefalonia my imaginary world would mercilessly collapse but a quick look out the window upon landing was enough to reassure me. One of the largest Greek islands, Kefalonia has dream beaches, mysterious caves and hidden lakes, picturesque villages, incredible views just waiting to be photographed and maybe shared with friends and family.

Prima di mettere piede in Grecia per la prima volta, immaginavo le Isole Ionie proprio come nei romanzi di Durrell e De Bernières che amavo tanto: un piccolo mondo ai confini della realtà, caldissime giornate estive, immensi uliveti e mare azzurro come il cielo. Temevo che all’arrivo a Cefalonia il mio mondo immaginario sarebbe crollato impietosamente ma un veloce sguardo fuori dal finestrino in fase di atterraggio è bastato a rassicurarmi. Una delle più grandi isole greche, Cefalonia ha spiagge da sogno, grotte misteriose e laghi nascosti, villaggi pittoreschi, panorami incredibili che non aspettano altro che essere fotografati e magari condivisi con amici e familiari.

For what is probably the hundredth time, tonight we find ourselves watching "MEDITERRANEAN" with a melancholy smile and eyes that can't take off the screen, enraptured by scenes and monologues that we now know by heart. It is a cinematic masterpiece but also something more, a state of mind.

Per quella che è probabilmente la centesima volta, stasera ci ritroviamo guardare "MEDITERRANEO” con un sorriso malinconico e gli occhi che non si staccano dallo schermo, rapiti da scene e monologhi che ormai conosciamo a memoria. É un capolavoro cinematografico ma anche qualcosa di più, uno stato d'animo.

They are among the largest reptiles in the world, inhabit almost all the oceans and are so ancient that they shared the planet with dinosaurs over 210 million years ago. The Caretta Caretta turtle ("loggerhead" in English for its large and muscular head) is a symbol of the Mediterranean and of Greece in particular: our coasts host 60% of the nests in the Mediterranean area and two of the most important breeding sites for the species, one in Zakynthos and the other in the western Peloponnese.

Sono tra i più grandi rettili del mondo, abitano quasi tutti gli oceani e sono animali talmente antichi da aver condiviso il pianeta con i dinosauri oltre 210 milioni di anni fa. La tartaruga Caretta Caretta ("loggerhead" in inglese per la sua testa larga e muscolosa) è un simbolo del Mediterraneo ed in particolare della Grecia: le nostre coste ospitano il 60% dei nidi nel Mediterraneo e due dei siti di riproduzione più importanti per le specie, uno a Zante e l'altro nel Peloponneso occidentale.

In July 1633 a strange story, almost a fairy tale, was recorded in an official document of the municipal register of Kefalonia. The Venetian governor Fantino Malipiero declared that the inhabitants of the island were terrorized by a man- and sheep-eating dragon and issued an order to kill the terrible beast. As many had already failed in the difficult task, a reward was offered: anyone brave enough to slay the dragon would be rewarded with a large part of the forest at the foot of Mount Ainos.

Nel luglio del 1633 una strana storia, quasi una favola, fu registrata in un documento ufficiale dell'anagrafe comunale di Cefalonia. Il governatore veneziano Fantino Malipiero dichiarò che gli abitanti dell'isola erano terrorizzati da un drago mangiatore di uomini e pecore ed emise un ordine per uccidere la terribile bestia. Poiché molti avevano già fallito nella difficile impresa, fu offerta una ricompensa: chiunque fosse abbastanza coraggioso da uccidere il drago sarebbe stato ricompensato con gran parte della foresta ai piedi del Monte Ainos.

A fearsome giant is buried under the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. His name is Enceladus, he has long dark hair and a thick beard, proud eyes and a rebellious spirit. According to the myth, Enceladus was at the head of the Titans who dared to challenge the gods of Olympus. What does it have to do with Kefalonia? Well, it seems that he is responsible for the earthquakes that occasionally shake the island.

Sotto le acque blu del Mar Mediterraneo è sepolto un temibile gigante. Il suo nome è Encelado, ha lunghi capelli scuri e una barba folta, occhi fieri e uno spirito ribelle. Secondo il mito, Encelado era a capo dei Titani che osarono sfidare gli dei dell’Olimpo. Cosa c'entra con Cefalonia? Beh, sembra sia proprio lui il responsabile dei terremoti che di tanto in tanto scuotono l’isola.
