- KAYAK: On an island with almost 240 km of coastline we can only put a sea activity at the top of our list. Kayaking is an ideal way to appreciate the colours and biodiversity of both the Ionian Sea and the island itself along cliffs, beaches, sea caves and forests. It is an activity suitable for all ages, does not require experience and is particularly recommended for those who like to travel slowly and responsibly. You can rent a kayak and explore the coast independently but, as with all outdoor activities in Kefalonia, taking part in an organised tour can allow you to discover hidden corners and curiosities on the island and to move in complete safety.
- SUP: Renting a SUP is another great way to explore secluded caves and coves and feel at one with nature. You can rent a SUP and explore the coasts of the island at your own pace but there are also guided excursions thanks to which you can reach magical places that only the locals know.
- SNORKELING AND DIVING: The rugged coastline and the water’s good visibility create excellent conditions for snorkelling and underwater activities. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced diver, the island has a huge choice of dive sites with fascinating walls, caves and even wrecks from the Roman era as well as the Second World War. There are also certified dive centres where you can get your PADI or SSI qualifications and learn more about the important Posidonia meadows and other marine life of the Ionian Sea.
- COASTEERING: Coasteering is an adventurous and dynamic activity that involves climbing, cliff diving and abseiling. Kefalonia is perfect for this sport: the high cliffs and rugged coastline are ideal to dive safely into the turquoise Ionian Sea and there are guides with all the technical skills and equipment to make this activity safe and fun even for the little ones.
- WATER SPORTS: On several beaches of the island you will find water sports to test your limits with fun and exciting water activities. Equipment and assistance are provided by the staff on site, you just have to choose your favourite activity and let yourself go! The proposals include jet ski to ride the waves at high speed, water ski, inflatables to bounce on the water in complete safety such as sliders, crazy sofas and banana boats, wakeboard and kneeboard. In Argostoli, near the De Bosset Bridge, you can also rent pedal boats and electric boats to explore the Koutavos lagoon and, with a bit of luck, meet the Caretta Caretta turtles in their natural environment. The lagoon is inhabited by many species of birds, fish and crustaceans and offers an unparalleled view of the Argostoli seafront.
- CAVING AND CANYONING: Kefalonia is one of the most fascinating islands in Greece from a geological point of view, with a truly unique system of underground caverns and lakes. Among the caves that can be visited, Melissani is the undisputed champion in terms of “instagrammability” for its truly astonishing colours but Drogarati is also very interesting for its large stalagmites and stalactites and its incredible acoustics. With the help of technical equipment and expert guides it is also possible to visit other caves, canyons and underground lakes with routes suitable for all ages.
- HIKING AND TREKKING: Hiking and trekking are the most popular outdoor activities in Kefalonia. There are trails all over the island but Mount Ainos is unbeatable for proposals and views. Covered with endemic black fir trees and other rare plants, most of the mountain is a protected reserve. Wildlife includes birds of prey and semi-wild horses. For the more adventurous, there are organized tours with local guides to reach isolated beaches, ghost villages or monasteries with a unique atmosphere.
- HORSE RIDING: There are several options on the island for horse riding lovers, but make sure you choose a riding school where the horses are cared for with respect and love and pick an appropriate time of day for your ride. You can choose from short excursions, full-day trips that include swimming breaks and walks among the olive groves and even multi-day trips that allow you to organize your holidays in Kefalonia according to your favourite outdoor activity.
- PARAGLIDING: With tandem paragliding you have the unique opportunity to admire Myrtos, one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, from the most privileged observation point. With the accompaniment of an expert pilot and all the necessary safety systems you can abandon yourself to an unforgettable adrenaline experience without needing any previous experience.
- CYCLING: Cyclists will find that their favourite sport is perfectly suited to Kefalonia’s green, hilly landscape and labyrinthine coastline. There are bike rentals in all the main villages of Kefalonia (Argostoli, Fiskardo, Agia Efimia, Sami, Lixouri, Lourdata, Skala…) and organised day and even multi-day excursions are held in many parts of the island. The geo park tour by mountain bike or e-bike is perhaps the most complete way to explore the centre of Kefalonia and be won over by its natural wealth.
Tried it all but still want more? Stay Active in Kefalonia is organised every year in late summer and is open to participants of all ages and abilities. Organised hikes, trail running, kayaking and cycling tours take place all over the island with guides who also share their knowledge of the island’s history and culture. The highlight of the event is a full 42km marathon but there are also many activities and events for the whole family to take part in when nature on the island is at its best.
