PALIKI, A TREASURE TO DISCOVER AT THE END OF THE SUMMER

Kefalonia is among the ten largest islands in Greece and the largest of the Ionian Islands, so large that it has regions with their own landscape and cultural identity. On the western coast is the Paliki peninsula, separated from the main body of the island by a long, narrow bay. Lixouri, the main center of Paliki, can be reached both by ferry from Argostoli and by road with a panoramic route that runs along the inside of the bay revealing the unique beauty of the Livadi plain.

Once you arrive in Paliki, it is clear that you have arrived in a piece of the Ionian Sea in its own right and with its own proud identity. Despite being attached to the rest of the island, Paliki has such a unique and diverse appearance that it deserves much more than a day's visit during your holidays. From the low and marshy lands of Livadi, a paradise for birdwatchers and a historical site of great importance, you quickly reach the famous red beaches surrounded by clay walls typical of the south of the peninsula. Leaving behind the contrasting colors of Xi, Megas Lakkos and Vatsa and going up the outer part of the peninsula you can admire cliffs with enchanting landscape views (for example from the Gero Gobos lighthouse, particularly suggestive at sunset) to finally be surprised by beaches accessible only by sea such as Fteri and Amidi, with turquoise waters and white pebbles protected by a lush green mountain all around. In the north of Paliki there are also other very popular beaches such as Petani, famous for its magical sunsets and often lively waves, and Platia Ammos, today inaccessible by road due to the collapses caused by earthquakes on the island and finally the delightful village of Atheras with its gray sand bay ideal for children and snorkeling lovers.

That Paliki is an almost autonomous region within the island is also demonstrated by the historical rivalry between Lixouri and Argostoli. The choice of the Venetians to elect Argostoli as the capital of the island aroused deep indignation among the citizens of Lixouri. If Argostoli was a newly born and less populous settlement, Lixouri and in general the Paliki peninsula had a long history and enjoyed a much more significant economy and culture. The Venetians, however, believed that its position was too peripheral to represent the administrative center of the island and that the port of Argostoli could also represent a safer landing place for ships in transit. The clashes between the two cities remained heated for many years but over time Lixouri's claims of autonomy were tamed to the point of reducing the clashes to a subtle antipathy between the two cities, still today engaged in competing for the primacy of who has the most prestigious musical tradition or the most beautiful carnival. Even today, Lixouri preserves cultural treasures and monuments that testify for the history of the city and the entire island, such as the Iakovatios Library. The collection housed in the library contains about 20,000 books, many of which date back to the 16th century.

Poorly equipped and a bit peripheral, but a place of peace and silence that is breathtakingly beautiful. The Paliki peninsula is the least touristic area of the island and the most uncontaminated, a natural paradise for those seeking a holiday with a slow pace, peace, authenticity especially at the end of the summer.
