Quando ci siamo trasferiti a Cefalonia siamo rimasti piacevolmente sorpresi nel renderci conto che viaggiare con il proprio animale domestico in Grecia è non solo possibile, ma molto piacevole. L’ospitalità locale è stata sempre riservata anche al nostro cane, a cui non è mai stato negata una ciotola di acqua fresca al ristorante, oltre alla possibilità di passeggiare ovunque indisturbato e di godersi la spiaggia proprio come noi. Ci sono chiaramente alcune norme da seguire e degli accorgimenti da tenere presente, che vi raccontiamo qui per preparare il vostro viaggio con tutta la famiglia, a 2 e 4 zampe, senza pensieri.

I had the privilege of growing up in a quiet mountain village where children in the evening could sit on the street, still warm from the sun, and look at a dark blue sky full of stars. I loved starry nights, even more when I was lucky enough to see a shooting star or fireflies. Today, reading an article on Mount Ainos and its entry in the IDSP (International Dark Site Park) register, I realized that, although I have grown up and I am in a place totally different from the one I was born in, I am still among the lucky few who in Summer can admire incredible starry nights (as well as bats, birds and other wonderful creatures that populate the night) simply by raising their eyes to the sky. Although in many places today it is no longer possible to clearly see the stars and constellations due to light pollution, throughout the world there are parks certified by the NGO International Dark-Sky Association which are committed to conserving and safeguarding the natural darkness of sky and with it to protect the environments and species closely linked to it.

Ho avuto il privilegio di crescere in un tranquillo paesino di montagna dove i bambini la sera potevano sedersi sulla strada ancora calda per il sole e guardare un cielo blu scuro pienissimo di stelle. Amavo le notti stellate, ancora di più quando avevo la fortuna di vedere una stella cadente o delle lucciole. Oggi leggendo un articolo sul Monte Ainos e la sua iscrizione del registro IDSP (International Dark Site Park) mi sono resa conto che, per quanto cresciuta e in un posto totalmente diverso da quello in cui sono nata, sono ancora tra i pochi fortunati che in estate può ammirare incredibili notti stellate (ma anche pipistrelli, uccelli ed altre creature meravigliose che popolano la notte) semplicemente alzando gli occhi al cielo. Anche se in molti luoghi oggi non è più possibile vedere chiaramente le stelle e le costellazioni a casa dell’inquinamento luminoso, in tutto il mondo esistono parchi certificati dalla ONG International Dark-Sky Association che si impegnano a conservare e salvaguardare l'oscurità naturale del cielo e con essa a proteggere gli ambienti e le specie ad essa strettamente collegati.

Many of you will already be familiar with komboloi (κομπολόι) and in Greece will have seen it flowing, grain after grain, between the fingers of men of all ages in cafés and on the streets. For those who are wondering what we are talking about, the komboloi is a string closed in a circle on which pearls of different materials are strung. It is a pastime, if necessary a rosary, a precursor of modern anti-stress but also and above all a powerful cultural symbol which was and still remains a predominantly male accessory.

Molti di voi conosceranno già il komboloi (κομπολόι) e in Grecia lo avranno visto scorrere, grano dopo grano, tra le dita di uomini di ogni età nelle caffetterie e sulle strade. Per chi invece si stesse chiedendo di cosa parliamo, il komboloi è una stringa chiusa a cerchio su cui sono infilate perle di diversi materiali. È un passatempo, all'occorrenza un rosario, un precursore dei moderni antistress ma anche e soprattutto un potente simbolo culturale che era e rimane tutt’oggi un accessorio prevalentemente maschile.

You will have noticed it during your travels in Greece: there is no drink more loved and consumed than coffee. Having a coffee here has nothing to do with the fast and mechanical gestures with which we usually bring a cup of espresso to our mouths before hastily continuing with our activities.

Ve ne sarete accorti durante i vostri viaggi in Grecia: non c'è bevanda più amata e consumata del caffè. Prendere un caffè qui non ha niente a che vedere con la gestualità veloce e meccanica con cui abitualmente portiamo alla bocca una tazzina di espresso prima di proseguire frettolosamente con le nostre attività.

If for those who don't speak Greek it can be almost a challenge to pronounce the term Tsiknopempti, for those who don't know at least a little about Greek culture it can be equally difficult to imagine that there is a day entirely dedicated to meat and, even more specifically, to perfume of grilled meat. Not only taverns and takeaways, but also shops, squares and even schools will be filled today with grills, meat, music and festive voices.

Se per chi non parla Greco può essere quasi un'impresa pronunciare il termine Tsiknopempti, per chi non conosce almeno un po' la cultura locale può essere altrettanto difficile immaginare che esista una giornata interamente dedicata alla carne e, ancora più nello specifico, al profumo della carne alla griglia. Non solo le taverne e le rosticcerie, ma anche i negozi, le piazze e perfino le scuole si riempiranno oggi di griglie, carne, musica e voci festose.

Maybe it's because February is the month of love, the birds wake us up in the morning singing out loud melodious harmonies and everything seems more beautiful when you live on a paradise island... In short, it's spring, love is in the air and it is difficult to resist it even if you don't have a truly romantic spirit.
