The creation of Dark Site Parks is intended to encourage communities to preserve dark sites through effective and responsible lighting policies. In fact, if used indiscriminately, artificial light can destroy ecosystems, impact human health, lead to a waste of money and energy, contribute to climate change and block our vision and connection with the universe.
In June 2023 Mount Ainos National Park was declared the first certified International Dark Sky Park in Greece. Managed by the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency, Ainos National Park is internationally recognized as a protected area forming part of the Kefalonia-Ithaca Geopark. This nomination came after years of close collaboration between the Greek section of Dark Sky International and the Ainos National Park and upon completion of a process co-financed by the European Union and Greece which saw the creation of light pollution measurements in the park, the modernization of the lighting of the Ainos antenna, the lighting study for public lighting in the south of the island, regular astronomical activities, the design of an educational park and an awareness programme, advertising activities and a complete operational plan for Dark Sky Park.
The park management organizes observation evenings every year. With the park's telescopes, visitors can observe nebulae, planets and other celestial bodies. With the use of a green laser they learn to navigate the night sky and name stars and constellations. Astronomical observation is organized in the car park at the park entrance (free access) and in the picnic area. To participate in one of the stargazing nights listed above you can contact the Koutavos Environmental Centre in Argostoli or call the number +302671029258.
