Tsiknopempti is the equivalent of our Shrove Thursday and is one of the favorite annual celebrations of Greeks, big consumers of meat. Tradition dictates that on this day everyone lights the grill, filling the air with an unmistakable scent. Announcing that the Carnival is over, the Tsiknopempti is an opportunity to meet up with friends or family and an excellent excuse to indulge in a break from the rules at the table. Traditional dances and folk music entertain people on the streets.
The festival probably has its origins in ancient Greece, when rich banquets were prepared to celebrate the beginning of spring and the fertile season. However, the tradition also has a connection with the Orthodox religion, according to which it is allowed to consume meat in view of Lent and the upcoming fast.
In short, Tsiknopempti is much more than just a barbecue. Kαλή όρεξη (bon appetite) to everyone, to those in Greece and to those who want to replicate this tradition at home and get into the Greek spirit before the holidays!
