Cefalonia ha una vita notturna? I visitatori “storici” dell’isola saranno probabilmente già pronti a rispondere che grazie al cielo no, la “loro” isola del cuore non è un posto per discoteche ed eventi ad alto volume. In effetti Cefalonia non è conosciuta per la sua vita notturna, quindi non aspettatevi una movida in stile Zante, Corfù o Mikonos, ma anche qui non mancano le occasioni per divertirsi sotto le stelle! Per chi vuole vivere le serate d’estate greche in modo tradizionale ci sono innumerevoli taverne tipiche, panigiri (sagre) con musica e danze fino a tarda notte oppure serate musicali. Per chi cerca invece un’atmosfera più dinamica e cosmopolita ci sono bar e locali che in estate sono molto frequentati da gente del posto e turisti provenienti da tutto il mondo.

The Kefalonia Botanical Garden was founded in 1998 on the initiative of the Fokas - Cosmetatos Foundation and is located a short distance from the centre of Argostoli, near the industrial area, on a plot of land of about 10,000 square meters. Constantly expanding and developing, Kefalonia Botanica carries out the important task of conserving and promoting the wild and endemic plants of Kefalonia and is actively involved in the promotion of environmental issues that are becoming increasingly urgent over time. Although Greece has the richest and most varied flora in Europe, in fact, the country has very few botanical gardens and research centers. The Greek flora is also threatened by summer fires, urban development, overgrazing and tourism, so it is essential to raise public awareness of environmental issues and encourage the enhancement of local flora in the context of sustainable development.

L’orto botanico di Cefalonia è stato fondato nel 1998 su iniziativa della Fondazione Fokas - Cosmetatos e si trova a breve distanza dal centro di Argostoli, nei pressi della zona industriale, su un terreno di circa 10.000 mq. In costante ampliamento e sviluppo, Kefalonia Botanica svolge l’importante compito di conservare e far conoscere le piante selvatiche ed endemiche di Cefalonia e si impegna attivamente nella promozione di questioni ambientali che si fanno con il passare del tempo sempre più urgenti. Sebbene la Grecia abbia la flora più ricca e varia d'Europa, infatti, nel paese si trovano pochissimi giardini botanici e centri di ricerca. La flora greca è inoltre minacciata da incendi estivi, sviluppo urbano, sovra pascolo e turismo, quindi è essenziale sensibilizzare l'opinione pubblica sui problemi relativi all'ambiente e valorizzare la flora locale nel contesto di uno sviluppo sostenibile.

The journey to Ithaca recounted by Cavafis is not only a metaphor for the meaning of life but is also a description of Ithaca that can be fully understood only once you have landed on this piece of land as enchanting as the song of the sirens. Ithaca is the destination for those seeking themselves, the remote corner where they can reflect on their experiences, reorder their thoughts and refresh themselves before resuming their journey. We recommend spending at least 3 or 4 days on the island to explore and savor it at a slow pace as it deserves but, if you want to visit it in a day, there is the possibility of taking a day tour departing from Kefalonia. It will be enough to enchant you and make you want to return as soon as possible, just like Ulysses.

Il viaggio a Itaca raccontato da Kavafis non è solo una metafora del senso della vita ma è anche una descrizione di Itaca che è possibile capire appieno solo una volta approdati su questo pezzetto di terra ammaliante come il canto delle sirene. Itaca è la destinazione per chi cerca sé stesso, l'angolo remoto dove riflettere sulle proprie esperienze. Vi consigliamo di trascorrere almeno 3 o 4 giorni sull’isola per esplorarla ed assaporarla a ritmo lento come merita, ma se desiderate visitarla in giornata esiste la possibilità di effettuare un tour giornaliero con partenza da Cefalonia. Basterà per incantarvi e farvi desiderare di tornare prima possibile, proprio come Ulisse.

Kefalonia is among the ten largest islands in Greece and the largest of the Ionian Islands, so large that it has regions with their own landscape and cultural identity. On the western coast is the Paliki peninsula, separated from the main body of the island by a long, narrow bay. Lixouri, the main center of Paliki, can be reached both by ferry from Argostoli and by road with a panoramic route that runs along the inside of the bay revealing the unique beauty of the Livadi plain.

Cefalonia è tra le dieci isole più grandi della Grecia e la più estesa delle Isole Ionie, così ampia da avere regioni con una propria identità paesaggistica e culturale. Sulla costa occidentale si trova la penisola di Paliki, separata dal corpo principale dell'isola da una baia lunga e stretta. Lixouri, centro principale del Paliki, è raggiungibile sia in traghetto da Argostoli sia via strada con un percorso panoramico che costeggia l'interno della baia svelando la bellezza unica della piana di Livadi. 

When we moved to Kefalonia we were pleasantly surprised to realize that traveling with your pet in Greece is not only possible, but very pleasant. Local hospitality has always been reserved to our dog too, who has never been denied a bowl of fresh water at the restaurant, as well as the possibility of walking everywhere undisturbed and enjoying the beach just like us.
