WHERE TO STAY IN KEFALONIA? 5 TIPS FOR CHOOSING YOUR OWN CORNER OF PARADISE

One of the questions we receive most often from our guests is in which area of the island are the most beautiful beaches. A question that really doesn't have an answer, Kefalonia is an island with exceptional landscapes from any point of view! Mediterranean scrub and sandy beaches in the south, rich vegetation framing coves of pebbles and fine gravel in the north, an entire wild peninsula in the west with red sand, high cliffs, fluorescent coloured waters. So is there a perfect location to choose? There are many, one for each of us. Here are our 5 tips for finding your personal corner of paradise.

1. Is this the right island for me?

Unlike other more touristic islands structured to meet any type of request, Kefalonia still maintains its well-defined rural identity and is aimed mostly at those seeking unspoiled nature, tranquillity and a simple and peaceful dimension. There are certainly tourist resorts that allow you to have everything within walking distance and resorts with swimming pools and all-inclusive formulas, but they are few, aimed at an international clientele and in any case very far from what one might find, for example, in tourist villages. If it is absolutely legitimate to want a holiday with certain services, it is equally wise to ask yourself if Kefalonia could be the ideal destination for your holidays. There's nothing more wrong than choosing a destination on impulse and then seeing that your holidays don't match your expectations. Better to ask yourself some questions, do some research and choose consciously.

2. What is ideal for some, is not ideal for everyone.

Groups, pages, forums... Social networks are inexhaustible sources of exact and very useful information, but also of inaccuracies and subjective opinions which, instead of clarifying ideas, end up confusing them. In good faith and with certainly good intentions, everyone suggests the same resorts, the same beaches and the same restaurants, perhaps without knowing that things may have changed a lot since their last visit. How to move then? Certainly it is useful to read as many reviews as possible, especially recent ones, and listen to the opinions of those who have already been to the island, but the surest way to avoid surprises is to rely on those who live on the island and make tourism promotion their profession to have a tailor-made suggestion.

3. North, South, West, East?

From a landscape point of view, the island has a huge variety that it would be a real shame not to see up close. The north is mostly green and with coves of pebbles or fine gravel with a wild charm, the south with sandy beaches (mostly equipped) and Mediterranean scrub, the peninsula to the west is a palette of colours and particular rock formations. The east coast has interesting caves and underground lakes, the north-west coast has majestic beaches and fluorescent coloured waters. Our suggestion is to choose the area in which to stay based on the views you prefer and the type of beaches you would like to be close to. In this way you will make a first important skimming and narrow down the area of your research in an significant way.

4. Traditional village or tourist resort?

After a year of hectic racing, hours in traffic and stress at work, the holidays are a well-deserved moment of rest. If your idea of relaxation is linked to the total absence of travel by car and the presence of beaches, taverns and shops within walking distance of your accommodation, the places to choose from are Lassi, Skala, Fiskardo, Assos, Lixouri. The options become more numerous if you include places a few minutes' drive from beaches or services: Agia Efimia, Sami, Argostoli, Poros are ideal centres for an evening stroll, but require a car journey to get to fairly large and well-equipped beaches. There are also many traditional villages that allow you to breathe the most authentic atmosphere of the island without giving up a central and functional position for travel. Svoronata, Lakithra, Karavados and Lourdata in the southwest, Karavomylos and Divarata in the centre, are excellent options for those who want to explore the island without straying too far from all the amenities. For the more adventurous travellers who wish to move off the beaten track, the Paliki is instead the ideal destination in which to spend days in absolute tranquillity in contact with nature. Let us suggest the most suitable location for you but also the property available with the best value for money, the effort of a few minutes by car could be compensated by particularly comfortable accommodation.

5. Being on vacation is first and foremost a state of mind

We know, it's not easy to go from the frenzy of ordinary life to a "closed for vacation" state of mind. However, the purpose of a holiday is to rest, be with friends and family and immerse yourself in the spirit of a place far from home, therefore abandoning the rigidities a little and enjoying the days as light-hearted as possible, focusing on the wonders to be discovered, is ultimately the only key to a successful holiday. Leave it to us to offer you accommodation in line with your needs and let yourself be pampered with advices on the most suitable beach for your children to dive from the rocks, the bar where you can wait for the sunset or the tavern where you can taste the best Moussaka of the island. We are in the land of "σιγά σιγά" (slowly) and of endless cafés, don't forget that.

So how do you choose where to stay? You can breathe a sigh of relief, whatever your choice will be a success. Depending on the type of holiday desired, it is advisable to prefer the north or the south, more touristic or quieter areas, but without thinking too much about it. Despite the size of the island, the distances will not be excessive in any case and breathtaking beaches and necessary services will always be easily reachable. All you have to do is write to us for any useful advice!
