THE DAYS OF ALCYONE

On a Greek island, especially in winter, time seems to go slower than in the rest of the world. The rhythms are marked by the conditions of the sky and the sea and reality finds an explanation in an intricate intertwining of myths, memories, history, traditions and science. It so happens that the warm temperatures of these days are not only determined by meteorological causes but also by a couple so in love as to involuntarily offend the gods, a compassionate Zeus and a beautiful sea bird, the Alcyone (or kingfisher).

AlcyonCeyx and Alcyone Carle van Looe, daughter of Aeolus, married Ceice, son of the morning star. Theirs was such a happy marriage that the two dared to compare themselves to Zeus and Hera. Outraged by this act of arrogance, the gods unleashed a storm while Ceice was at sea, causing him to drown. Alcyone threw himself into the waters to reach him even in death but Zeus, moved by compassion, gave them both wings and transformed them into birds.

The nest of the couple, built near the sea, was however continually destroyed by the waves. Zeus again took pity on the couple and calmed the sea for seven days, before and after the winter solstice, so that they could lay their eggs. For this reason the alcyons are considered a link between sky and sea and a symbol of reconciliation.

Kefalonia has all the credentials to accommodate not only Greek traditions and mythology enthusiasts, but also lovers of ecotourism and birdwatching. Although sources cite slightly different numbers, more than 200 bird species have been recorded on the island so far thanks to its diverse habitats and central position on the migratory lines. Koutavos lagoon, Karavomilos lake, Livadi bay and Mount Ainos are ideal places to admire the pastel colors of Kefalonia, its unique flora and fauna. Today mild temperatures have been replaced by a cold winter breeze. Surrounded by lush vegetation and under the vault of a very clear blue sky, however, the alcyon continues to fly and the sky and the sea seem ever closer.
