- awarded by international recognitions and famous for its fluorescent colors, Myrtos is at the top of the list of the best beaches in all of Greece. Its deep turquoise waters are embraced by dazzling white pebbles and framed by high and steep cliffs. At sunset, the panoramic terraces above the bay offer the opportunity to admire the red sky that merges with the absolute blue and to take incredible souvenir photos.
- the walk that goes up to the castle of Assos, on the central-western coast of the island, is one of the most famous photographic points in Kefalonia. The view of one of the most beautiful villages on the island is spectacular at any time of day, but it is at sunset that the houses of the village turn golden and the cliffs around the village seem to really shine.
- the ethereal beach of Petani, on the Paliki peninsula, competes on equal terms with Myrtos in beauty and popularity. Surrounded by water sources, this bay of incomparable splendour is embraced by lush vegetation and near the rocks has a seabed ideal for snorkelling. The beach faces west, so the view of the sunset over the sea is simply exceptional!
- Alaties is one of the smallest beaches in the north of the island but it is also one of the most particular. Its name comes from the Greek word "alati", salt. For centuries the locals have collected the sea salt that forms naturally and accumulates on the rocks to the right of the beach here. Like a tiny pool carved into the rock, Alaties is a true natural paradise that at sunset seems to glow orange: sit on the rocks and enjoy the show, it will be the most romantic moment of your holiday!
- A few kilometres from Argostoli is one of the most famous symbols of Kefalonia, the lighthouse of Saint Theodore. Also known as “Fanari”, lantern, the lighthouse is located on an artificial promontory and can also be reached with a pleasant walk on the coastal road that leads to Lassi. It is a great place to relax, swim and enjoy the view of the sun setting behind the Lixouri peninsula, painting the sea with bright colors.
- Kalamia is located between Lassi and Argostoli and can also be admired from above by driving along the coastal road between the two towns. It is impossible not to notice it, this natural pool framed by caves is truly incredible beauty! You need to go down a short path to reach the beach, where there are a couple of rows of umbrellas and a beach bar. At sunset the shallow water seems to glow red and a swim near the caves will give you a magical moment to end the day.
- Have you been to Petani but found it a bit too crowded to stop? Well, the hope of enjoying an unforgettable sunset, perhaps sitting comfortably at a table, is not lost yet. The nearby village of Damoulianata (about 15 minutes) is your lifeline: sit at one of the tables of the Ladokolla stin plagia tavern and enjoy delicious traditional dishes while the sun gives way to the stars. The panoramic view from the taverna balcony is fabulous!
- The Gerogompos Lighthouse, about 15 minutes from Lixouri on the Paliki peninsula, is one of the most suggestive spots on the island to admire a splendid sunset and feel at one with the blue expanse in front of you. The view you will see once you reach the lighthouse (via a recently paved road) and the peace of this place will reward you for all the effort you made to get there. It is the westernmost point of the whole island; you will feel like you can wave goodbye to Italy!
- The earthquake is part of everyday life in Kefalonia and has greatly influenced its history, economy and appearance. Ruined houses, abandoned villages and tumbledown castles whisper the stories of the island, testifying to a past that the locals cannot and do not want to forget. Kourouklata, not far from Argostoli, is one of our last recommendations for an unforgettable sunset in Kefalonia: after the 2014 earthquake, the bell tower of Agios Ioannis Chrisostomos was removed from the church for safety reasons and was placed on a panoramic point. From the square where the bell tower was deposited, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the bay and Lixouri on the other side of the sea. It is a simple, uncrowded and quiet place to enjoy a moment of silence but also a testament to the resilience and natural beauty of the island.
- We close our list of unmissable sunsets with a boat trip. Is there anything more magical than being surrounded by the thousand reflections of the water in the golden hour, feeling all the melancholy of a wonderful moment that ends but also the excitement of seeing the stars shine soon? Numerous tours in different parts of the island offer sunset tours, but for an experience full of comfort and fun we recommend our boat trip from Argostoli with aperitif and live music.
Do you know the saying “there are never two identical sunsets”? Don’t risk missing even one: write down our suggestions and enjoy every moment of your next holiday!
