SNAPSHOTS FROM KEFALONIA: THE BEST 10 PHOTO STOPS

Before setting foot in Greece for the first time, I imagined the Ionian Islands just like in the novels by Durrell and De Bernières that I loved so much: a small world on the edge of reality, with very hot summer days, immense olive groves and a sea as blue as the sky. I feared that upon arrival in Kefalonia my imaginary world would mercilessly collapse but a quick look out the window upon landing was enough to reassure me. One of the largest Greek islands, Kefalonia has dream beaches, mysterious caves and hidden lakes, picturesque villages, incredible views just waiting to be photographed and maybe shared with friends and family.

If you're planning a trip and are wondering where you should point your camera, here are some ideas to start with:

  1. Myrtos is undoubtedly one of the most photographed beaches on the island, and for good reasons. The panoramic point from which most visitors take their photos of this majestic beach is located on the coastal road that leads from Argostoli towards Fiskardo. The white cliffs and striking turquoise waters of Myrtos are even more beautiful up close, however: arrive early and the beach could be all to yourself! If, however, you want a truly unique photographic memory, don't miss the possibility of a paragliding flight on the beach and incredible photos from above taken with the GoPro!
  1. Melissani Lake has a unique atmosphere but above all a breathtaking beauty that will make your travel photos truly extraordinary. The sun's rays filtering through the cavity in the ceiling give the water its turquoise colour and brilliance, while the walls of the cave seem to dance thanks to the shimmer caused by the rippling water. The best time to visit the cave and portray it in all its beauty is when the sun is highest in the sky.
  1. Being the highest peak of the Ionian Islands, Mount Ainos is the best place to admire wonderful views and take amazing souvenir photos while enjoying, why not, a break from the heat of the beach. On a clear day, from the numerous panoramic points on the “Black Mountain" it is possible to admire not only Kefalonia but also the profile of the nearby islands. Furthermore, the national park, with trees, flowers, paths and numerous animal species, offers unique opportunities for nature photography enthusiasts.
  1. The picturesque village of Assos, with its colourful houses and charming harbor, offers endless opportunities for wonderful shots. Stroll the narrow streets, capture the details of the Venetian-style buildings and take photos of the tranquil bay and its fishing boats. The idyllic setting and unique charm of the village make Assos a photographer's dream. The best spot to take your photo from? The paved path that leads to the Venetian castle: from this elevated point it is possible to view the entire town head-on and be surprised by its pastel colours at different times of the day.
  1. For those who love taking evocative photos at sunset we suggest three different locations in three areas of the island. The first is Saint Theodor’s lighthouse, which with its recently repainted white columns stands out brightly over the Argostoli lagoon and the Paliki coast. Petani beach, with its mix of sand and pebbles and the often foaming sea, is the second place to visit when the sun dives into the sea. The small bay of Alaties, with its sharp sea cliffs and crystal clear water, is the third but not last jewel which shines even more at sunset.
  1. The striking blue building overlooking the bay of Porto Atheras, dotted with fishing boats that almost seem to float on the transparent water, is legitimately one of the most photographed spots in Kefalonia. The peace of this bay, wild and with very vivid colours, is exactly what every Greece enthusiast dreams of and the irresistible beauty of this place remains imprinted not only in the photos, but also in the memories of anyone who has been here.
  1. Fiskardo is located at the northern end of the island but the picturesque seafront of this fishing village is certainly worth the trip. Terraces overlooking the water framed by bougainvillea, narrow alleys, colourful houses and sailboats create a perfect setting for photo shots. The glamorous and refined environment, the exclusive boutiques and the many yachts that choose Fiskardo to moor make Fiskardo look like a small Portofino: all you have to do is immortalize it and bring its atmosphere home with you!
  1. No one resists the allure of the forbidden so here we are for a panoramic shot above Platia Ammos beach, located near the Kipoureon Monastery on the Paliki peninsula. The beach is similar to Myrtos or Petani in features but preserves a wild charm. In fact, the beach is not equipped nor easy to reach. It is surrounded by steep rock walls and around 280 steps have been dug into the cliff, today largely destroyed by earthquakes. For those who want to see it from closer, all that remains is to embark to reach the beach in complete safety.
  1. Located on the north-western coast of Kefalonia, Fteri Beach is a hidden gem accessible only by boat or a rather challenging hike. Its white pebbles, crystal clear waters and spectacular rock formations can only provide the backdrop for unique photographs. A boat tour will allow you to fill your eyes with a thousand shades of blue and a light so intense that it will warm even the greyest autumn days back in the city.
  1. In honour of the kafeneio, an authentic institution in Greece, the last stop of our photographic tour of the island is dedicated to two cafés with a unique atmosphere. The first place to take memorable photos between a coffee and a drink is Cafè Remetzo in Poros. This truly original place is carved into the rock and allows you to sit right on the sea, feeling like you are on a boat among the rocks, lulled by the sound of the waves. A cold beer with a panoramic view, instead, awaits you at Caffè Platanos in Lourdata. With its particular decor and an adorable little terrace in the shade of the plane trees overlooking the bay, the place seems to have come straight from the pages of a book.

In short, Kefalonia is a dream for both photography enthusiasts and younger digital content creators. Hurry up to discover not only ours, but also your favourite photo spots!
